Motrona LW 217 and LW 218 optical fibre modules
Motrona of Germany has developed two optical fibre links: the LW 217 and LW 218. One designed for use with incremental encoders and the second for SSI serial output signals with either 13 or 24 bits. Motrona claims these links provide an interference-free transmission of the data up to a distance of 1500 m.
Both interfaces comprise three parts: a transmitter at the device end, a standard single fibre-optic cable and a receiver in the control cabinet. The unit designed for incremental encoders can also be used to transmit up to six individual signal lines from any other digital switching device such as a proximity switch or photo electric head.
The modules have diagnostic LEDs at both input and output ends and a general alarm function with galvanic isolation (optocoupler). The light transmission uses an LED light source rather than laser so the transmission line is safe, even when the fibre is damaged.
The modules are available in various level and supply voltage variants.
