Rosemount X-well Technology — Improve safety, reducing potential leak points and lowering overall cost.

The most common way to measure temperature in the process industries is with a sensor inside a thermal well installed directly into the process. There are, however, challenges associated with this method: from the initial design considerations, to the installation, maintenance and weight frequency calculations. With Rosemount X-well technology these challenges are no longer a concern. It is now possible to have an accurate and repeatable process temperature measurement while improving safety reducing potential leak points and lowering overall cost.

How it works

Rosemount X-well technology is a complete point solution for process temperature measurement that does not require a thermowell or process penetration. Measuring the ambient and pipe surface temperatures, this solution calculates process temperature via a thermal conductivity algorithm. This calculation takes into account the thermal conductive properties of the assembly and pipe for reliable and accurate process temperature measurements.

Challenges of the conventional approach:

  • Complex design and installation
  • Time-consuming wake frequency calculations (WFC) required
  • Process-penetrating installation and welding of flange and nozzle
  • Any change in process conditions requires WFC recalculations
  • Thermowell re-designs and pipe modifications are often needed, leading to project delays

The benefits of Rosemount X-well Technology:

  • Simple design and installation
  • No need for wake frequency and dynamic stress calculations
  • Installation does not involve welding and penetrating the pipe
  • Changes are quick with few parameter adjustments
  • No exotic material required

X-well Technology meeting the challenges:

  • Lowers project schedule risks by eliminating the need for final process conditions prior to quoting
  • Frees up engineering resources from thermowell design and wake frequency calculations
  • Last minute field programming can be solved in the late stages of the project
  • Simple clamp installation and easy maintenance

Suitable applications

This technology is suitable for many applications, including the majority of pipe processes:

  • Pipeline monitoring
  • Small line size applications
  • Retrofit projects
  • Pipeline requiring frequent cleaning
  • High velocity processes
  • Slurries and heavy particulate fluids
  • Clean-In-Place (CIP) processes
  • High viscosity fluids
  • Harsh processes requiring exotic materials
