Hydrogen as a fuel

On the road to climate-friendlier mobility, the global transport industry is looking to move away from internal combustion engines in a bid to become eco-friendly and more sustainable. As a result of this new direction to utilise greener, more efficient methods of power generation, hydrogen is fast becoming a popular alternative for generating electricity globally. However, transferring hydrogen between storage containers is more complex than the more traditional sources of fuel like petrol or diesel.

Unlike other gases, hydrogen heats up as it expands during the refuelling process. The pressure and temperature changes that occur during refuelling need to be precisely monitored in order to remain accurate. Therefore, Heinrichs Messtechnik GmbH has developed the TMU-W mass flow meter, which ensures precise metering despite pressure and temperature fluctuations. The device is the first of its kind certified to international standard OIML R 139 2018 and thus approved for hydrogen filling stations.

The TMU-W is a slender yet robust device that houses specially arranged sensors and measuring loops that are common with a Coriolis mass flow meter. The meter is designed to withstand operating pressures up to 1000 bar and is capable of measuring the flow rate and the temperature of the hydrogen passing through with a high degree of accuracy. The attached transducer is the electronics that is capable of converting the measurement signal into an easy-to-read value for the operator via its two-line LCD display. Additionally, the transducer may be configured to transmit the flow rates or total value through to other third-party devices that may be found elsewhere in the refuelling system.

Features and benefits of the TMU-W Coriolis mass flow meter include:

  • Custody transfer certified to OIML R 139 2018
  • 1000 bar pressure rating
  • Coriolis measuring principle
  • Measuring range up to 4 kg/min
  • Pulse and analog output capability, including HART
  • High accuracy of ±0.5%
  • IP67/68 rating
  • Stainless steel 316 TI wetted materials
  • Compact design.
