Ethernet switching hubs

Omron Electronics has released the W4S1 series of industrial switching hubs. Switching hubs are a requirement for all ethernet networks with three or more nodes. In the initial release, three models are available, with either three or five ports.

The W4S1 has several features that make it suitable for industrial applications. Its rugged construction and reliability are a must for industrial applications. Other factors include its DIN rail mounting, LED indications for easy faultfinding and the 24 VDC power source. The W4S1-05C unit can also detect and suppress broadcast storms and internal failures. It also provides a contact for external monitoring.

Each unit supports automatic bit rate detection (10 or 100 Mbps) and MDI (medium dependent interface), meaning normal or crossover cables can be used interchangeably for easier connections. Up to 2000 MAC addresses can be detected by the W4S1 series, which have an internal buffer of 80 Kb.

Quality of service packet prioritisation is built into each model, providing determinism across the network. All industrial networks like EtherNet/IP require determinism to guarantee packet interval rates.

The W4S1 measures 90 x 78 x 25/48 mm and does not require set-up software — the unit can be inserted straight into a network from the box.
