Combined active barrier and loop power supply

Wednesday, 01 April, 2009 | Supplied by: Endress+Hauser Australia Pty Ltd

The SIL2-rated RN221N combined active barrier and power supply provides galvanic isolation for 4–20 mA measurement signals, is suitable for use in hazardous areas, and can be powered by 20-250 VAC/DC, reducing the need for different versions across the plant.

The RN221N’s use of front-mounted HART communication sockets makes it simple to obtain information or reprogram the instrument without removing it or disconnecting the wires.

Using a conveniently positioned DIP switch, HART diagnosis can be selected. This option provides these possibilities — monitoring the 4–20 mA signal for compliance with NAMUR NE43, evaluation of the HART status byte to alarm when the connected device is in error mode, and checking the E+H-specific diagnostic command for early warning of changed process conditions with E+H devices. Featuring a 22.5 mm (Preline) width and compact DIN rail mount, the device has a small form factor making installation simple.

The RN221N is offered with an IEC Ex ia rating which indicates that its electrical energy is restricted to a level below that which can cause ignition by either sparking or heating effects, making it suitable for use in hazardous areas.
