Siemens to assist in SA advanced manufacturing site
South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill and Siemens executives have signed a memorandum of understanding for Siemens to become a strategic partner in a project to build an advanced manufacturing complex in Adelaide. Under the agreement, Siemens will endorse and promote the suburban Tonsley Park development, to national and global audiences, and investigate opportunities for education, research and industry collaboration.
"Through the $253 million Tonsley Park redevelopment, we will be growing a new manufacturing future for South Australia," Weatherill said in a statement from London.
"The redevelopment will bring together tertiary students with enterprising businesses who want to make new products that people want to buy."
The 61-hectare Tonsley Park redevelopment, which takes up much of the site once used by car maker Mitsubishi, is expected to create 6300 jobs over the next 20 years. Siemens spokesman Jurgen Schneider said the company was delighted to partner the South Australian government on what was a major step forward for advanced manufacturing in Australia.
"Our company has a particular interest in sustainable technologies, education and research and advanced manufacturing, so our involvement in Tonsley Park is a natural fit," Schneider said.
