NDT Zone to feature at AOG 2014

Wednesday, 08 January, 2014

The 2014 Australasian Oil and Gas Exhibition and Conference (AOG) will feature a new zone: the Non-destructive Testing and Condition Monitoring Zone, which is sponsored by the Australian Institute of Non-destructive Testing (AINDT).

Non-destructive testing (NDT) refers to any analysis technique used to evaluate the properties of materials or components without causing damage and without permanently altering the article being inspected. NDT can save both money and time in product evaluation, troubleshooting and research.

AOG is the Australia’s largest oil and gas exhibition and the 2014 event will be held at the Perth Conference and Exhibition Centre from 19 to 21 February.

Exhibiting in its own right for the first time in 2014, Olympus will also present two papers in the AOG seminar program on the benefits of phased array (PA) testing.

“Our experts will be coming to Perth to explain the many benefits of PA over traditional radiography,” said Derek Burns, Sales Specialist with Olympus.

“In particular, that there is no need to shut down whole sections of an industrial site and clear the area so that workers are not exposed to radiation.”

Ultrasonic weld inspection sends a sound beam into the part at an angle and receives a reflection from any discontinuity. In conventional ultrasonics, three separate scans are usually performed at angles of 45, 60 and 70°. With PA, beams at each of the three standard angles - and all those in between - can be generated electronically. Each beam can then be combined into a composite picture called the sector scan where different colours indicate the size of the reflection.
