RMIT University and Hirschmann distributor Daanet are working together to help industry partners connect with the latest developments in Industrial Ethernet by delivering tailored training.

Five students from the Zinfra Group and Emerson Process Management recently attended week-long training sessions at RMIT’s City campus in the Melbourne CBD.

Bruce Kendall, senior educator business development in RMIT’s School of Engineering TAFE, said Industrial Ethernet was vital to a range of industries including oil and gas, metals and mining, transport, power, manufacturing, food and building automation.

“Industrial Ethernet goes a step further than data communications equipment for controlled environments, as networks and equipment need to be able to function in significantly harsher environments where temperature, humidity or vibrations would impact on performance,” Kendall said.

“It’s important that there are opportunities for industry to stay on top of the latest technological developments in this field.

“In collaboration with Daanet, RMIT is in an ideal position to provide training that is both up to date and responsive to real-world industry needs.”

Daanet’s Adam Rickards said improved reliability and performance was achieved mostly through Ethernet switching rather than IP routing.

“Furthermore, integration between SCADA systems and the networks that power them is critical to assist engineers in quickly responding to faults preventing efficient production,” Rickards said.

RMIT delivers Industrial Ethernet training, which is accredited by Hirschmann Automation and Control, as part of RMIT Short Courses. Tailored training is also delivered directly to businesses.

RMIT is the sole provider of Hirschmann-certified training courses in Industrial Ethernet for Australian and New Zealand.
