Wireless level measurement on the increase

Level is the process measurement for which suppliers are eagerly pursing wireless solutions. The characteristics of a tank farm exemplify why wireless is appropriate for such applications. Storage tank locations are generally not central to the control room, requiring added costs for digging trenches, laying conduit, associated labour, engineering and maintenance.

Wireless solutions afford flexibility in connectivity from anywhere in the world via the Internet. Sensor suppliers are partnering with telemetry suppliers to develop practical solutions for wireless level devices.

In a recent interview, ARC senior analyst Paula Hollywood says, "Industries where level measurement is common, such as petrochemical, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, and water and wastewater, can derive excellent benefit from wireless level measurement systems. More importantly, wireless level devices provide a path to operational excellence by providing access to real-time accurate level data, minimising downtime, and increasing process throughput by optimising inventory control and improving efficiency of distribution channels."
