Finding the time to train is always a problem and if it's fibre optic training you're after, well it's simply not widely available. But now there is help at hand in the shape of a new online training system.

Log on to www.howtodoit.org and you'll find a training system that covers fibre theory, fibre cables, fibre preparation, cleavers, mechanical splicing, fusion splicing, direct connectorisation, indoor enclosures, outdoor enclosures, power meters and sources, OTDRs, fibre optic system design and fibre technology. There are self-evaluation tests and online final exams.

The course includes audio, video, animations, pictures and text. It is self-paced and operates 24/7. Students receive three months' online access to complete 30-40 hours worth of training.

The course is appropriate for cablers, system designers, engineers and consultants. A CD-ROM of the training is also available with video and audio content.

This course might not replace attending college, where you'll be taught by experienced teachers, but it certainly can be a useful introduction to fibre.
