ABB has announced the opening of a new variable speed drive production line in Finland.

Variable speed drives are used in almost all industries to control the speed of motors. By adjusting motor speed based on demand, significant amounts of energy can be saved. The new line uses large robots and futuristic manufacturing techniques; initially producing 100 drives a day in the power range 55 to 800 kW.

Robert Zhu, head of drives and automation services for ABB in Australia, says the line is easily adjusted to customer requirements. The drives also reduce the impact of carbon dioxide emissions on the environment.

"This new production facility strengthens or market position, which is driven by strong product development," said Zhu. "We needed to expand our operations to meet growing demand for our products."
