The MathWorks has introduced Release 2008b (R2008b) of its MATLAB and Simulink product families. R2008b includes new features in MATLAB and Simulink, two new products, 19 major updates, and enhancements to the PolySpace code verification products.

Among the most significant enhancements in this release, The MathWorks has introduced the new Simscape language for creating physical modelling components and acausal simulation domains in the Simulink environment. In addition, Parallel Computing Toolbox now enables users to distribute parallel MATLAB applications as standalone executables or software components that can take advantage of computing clusters.

The Symbolic Math Toolbox provides a notebook interface for symbolic computation, plus direct access to MuPAD symbolic engine and language from MATLAB, and Simulink Fixed Point supports word lengths up to 128 bits for accurate design and simulation, with support for C and HDL code generation. In addition, Statistics Toolbox now supports nonlinear mixed-effects models (NLME) used in computational biology and other applications.

Additional products added to the suite are SimElectronics, for modelling and simulating electronic and electromechanical systems in the Simulink environment, and Econometrics Toolbox, for economic forecasting and risk management.
