Compact manifold design increases flexibility

Monday, 10 August, 2009

Generally, most standard mobile-style directional valves require an independent power supply and separate mountings. In some cases, these valves may be interfaced with existing manifolds and valves, although this can be challenging to design and in many instances the result is both aesthetically impractical and not cost effective.

The Sun Hydraulics range of proportional valves and electronic amplifiers provides considerable benefits to enable a consolidated manifold design. The valve range provides both traditional spool functions with electronic proportional control. Standard solenoid coils are provided in the electronic controls and do not have a complex design or prohibitive cost.

Ongoing development with Sun Hydraulics cartridge valve technology has provided designers of equipment powered by hydraulic systems with increased flexibility.

Custom Fluidpower has applied this valve technology to its manifold design in order to provide safety and operating efficiency in many engineering applications. In a recent customer application, a hydraulic system was redesigned to eliminate multiple manifolds and valves. The new single manifold design effectively replaces these multiple items and also features state-of-the-art electronic control components.

Advantages of the single manifold design

The single manifold design using Sun components has a broad range of engineering applications and is particularly suited to applications using multiple valves and a significant number of hydraulic hose installations. The design has many advantages, including:

  • Service port location flexibility;
  • Reduction in hose assemblies;
  • Valve location flexibility;
  • Fewer component parts;
  • Reduced manifold size and weight; and
  • Completely functional hydraulic circuit in one manifold.
