High-power RFID now available

Wednesday, 30 July, 2008

The radio frequency identification (RFID) industry is set for acceleration as the limit of RFID power is lifted to 4 W.

According to GS1 Australia, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has granted it an extension to its licence to allow for radiofrequency devices with up to 4 W of power.

Previously, the RFID power was limited to 1 W, even though most international services required 4 W.

In 2005, the ACMA gave GS1 Australia a trial licence to issue third-party authorisations for the use of site-specific 4 W power. The result of this operation has prompted a review process and changes to the licence will be finalised by the end of 2008.
