The Allen-Bradley Stratix series of managed industrial ethernet switches has been extended to include a Layer 3 model. The Stratix 8300 includes the same capabilities as the Layer 2 Stratix 8000, but supports Layer 3 functionality such as routing between subnets and VLANs. In this way, Stratix 8300 provides communication between segmented networks for better performance, security and protection from broadcast storms on the network.

The modular Stratix 8000 and 8300 are optimised for operation in both IT and manufacturing environments. Co-developed with Cisco, the managed switch series uses the current Cisco Catalyst switch architecture, feature set and configuration tools. This operating system also allows for easy set-up and comprehensive diagnostics from within the Rockwell Automation Integrated Architecture system. The switch can be configured using RSLogix 5000 programming software. It also automatically generates Logix tags for integrated diagnostics and includes FactoryTalk View faceplates for status monitoring and alarming.

The Stratix switch series incorporates several features designed to improve system flexibility and uptime, including Resilient Ethernet Protocol (REP), a high-speed ring protocol that provides network resiliency across switches with a rapid recovery time, and Hot Standby Router Protocol (HSRP) provides resilience and fast switchover of IP traffic between VLANs in the event a layer 3 switch is removed from the network.

The ‘DHCP per port’ capability allows the switch to assign IP addresses to end devices connected to the switch, while CIP Sync Time Protocol allows automation equipment to achieve clock synchronisation within the 100 ns range.
