In the industrial-automation environment, interfaces like RS232, RS485, or RS422 serial communication are still widely used. For instance, printers, barcode scanners, data loggers and weighing systems are integrated into the I/O system via a serial interface. The IB IL RS Uni-Pac Inline terminal from Phoenix Contact offers a combined solution available for the inline I/O system that integrates the three serial interfaces in one terminal. As a consequence, these standard function blocks reduce warehousing and programming costs.

The inline terminal also provides an expansion of all RS232 handshake signals and data transfer rates up to 250,000 baud. If the standard baud rates are not sufficient, they can be parameterised as required for the particular application. The communication terminals can be flexibly used as a result of the variable process data width, which can be changed depending on the application. They also support various protocols such as transparent, end-end or Xon/Xoff.
