WA invests in local wind generator repair and refurbishment

The WA Government has announced today that local company National Electric Motor Services (NEMS) will receive $500,000 through the Wind Energy Manufacturing Co-Investment Program, supporting the business to refurbish and service wind turbine generators locally.

The facility will reduce reliance on international service providers and improve turnaround times for wind farm operators who currently are required to ship their repair works overseas. The funding will assist NEMS to expand its current capabilities to heavy lifting and handling, automated high-capacity testing, thermal processing and advanced quality assurance systems for the wind energy sector.

The Wind Energy Manufacturing Co-Investment Program offers up to 50% of eligible project costs and industry partners are required to match the level of funds.

So far, the Co-Investment Program has been able to provide $5,544,287 in co-investment, stimulating investment of more than $14 million into the local wind energy sector.

Previous recipients of the program are Australian Winders, Turbine Solutions, RCR Mining Technologies and CamCo Engineering.

“This is fantastic news for Malaga and the surrounding community, with a local business expanding its capabilities and creating more opportunities for skilled jobs right here in our suburbs,” said West Swan MLA Rita Saffioti. “NEMS is an important local business, and this investment will help it grow into a state-of-the-art facility servicing the wind energy sector.”

WA currently has 25 large wind farms which are scheduled for development over the coming decades, with some projects above 1 GW in scale.
