Offer to contribute to developing a climate risk tool for engineers
Engineers Australia has announced that it is setting up a short-term working group that will discuss and develop tools to assist engineers in evaluating climate risks in their projects.
As part of Engineers Australia’s Climate Smart Engineering Initiative (CSEI), two senior expert Engineers Australia Office Bearers will co-lead the climate risks working group, to be made up of eight to 10 members of chartered experience.
After initially scoping deliverable objectives, the group will develop climate risk assessment tools, discuss how they will be promoted and provide recommendations for further action.
Systematically evaluating climate risk is an important piece of the engineering climate response. Engineers need to understand climate-related risks so they can take steps — physical measures, response procedures or contingency plans — to deal with the future uncertainties of Australia’s changing climate.
Engineers Australia said that its Climate Smart Engineering Initiative aims to “support engineering innovators and change-makers to discuss, partner and collaborate on climate solutions in their professional lives”.
The working group will be delivering on the CSEI’s key activities 1.3 (evaluating climate risk) and 13.29 (climate risk tool), providing tangible outcomes for climate smart engineering.
Register your interest
Engineers Australia is looking for chartered engineers with experience in qualitative and quantitative risk analysis including scenarios; hazard and vulnerability assessments of engineered systems and assets; interpretation and application of the findings from the best available climate science; and expertise in developing risk mitigation, climate adaptation, and resilience strategies.
The working group will meet virtually, no more than once a month over a four-month period.
If you would like to take part in this working group, please complete the expression of interest form and send it via email to csei@engineersaustralia.org.au. Expressions of interest close COB Friday 14 April 2023.
