Construction begins on south‍-‍west WA advanced manufacturing hub

The WA Government has announced that work is now underway on a $55 million Advanced Manufacturing Technology Hub (AMTECH) in Picton. The government says the project will deliver the anchor tenant site at WA’s first ever hub for advanced manufacturing, technology and renewable energy.

Construction will be overseen by Development WA, and the Department of Energy and Economic Diversification will issue a request for proposals for an anchor tenant in July.

The hub is being built to support the growth of advanced manufacturing in Western Australia, helping to diversify the South West economy and position the region to capture new opportunities, according to the government. The anchor tenant will work closely with the state, to manufacture the parts needed to support the energy transition away from state-owned coal by 2030.

“Local manufacturing is good for jobs, good for businesses and good for our state’s economy,” said Energy and Decarbonisation and Manufacturing Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson. “We want local WA workers to take advantage of the clean energy transition and advanced manufacturing opportunities, which is why we are also investing in TAFE, training and apprenticeship opportunities.”

“Reaching this construction milestone is a major step forward for the South West, strengthening the region’s role in the state economy and unlocking new opportunities in advanced manufacturing and clean energy,” said South West Minister Don Punch.
