ASI will continue to seek tariff relief for steel
The Australian Steel Institute (ASI) has said it will continue to work with the Australian Government to secure an exemption from the USA’s 25% tariff on Australian steel, despite confirmation on 12 March that the tariff will go ahead.
ASI is the peak body for the Australian steel industry, representing 500 companies and 5000 members. Steel generates 100,000 jobs and $30 billion in annual revenue in Australia.
ASI chief executive Mark Cain said the tariff was disappointing, but the ASI will continue pressing for relief on behalf of its members.
The organisation says the last Trump administration granted Australia an exemption after nine months of lobbying by the government and others.
