ARM Hub and Quantum Australia offering internships

ARM Hub and Quantum Australia recently joined up to host a Discovery Workshop, launching the Deep Tech Innovation Internship (DTI2), a program designed to bridge the gap between quantum technology expertise and industry application.

Held at ARM Hub, the workshop brought students from disciplines spanning computer science, electrical, mechanical, aerospace and materials engineering to tackle real industry challenges that don’t come with textbook answers.

After a briefing on what quantum and advanced technologies can deliver today, students moved into small table discussions built around problem statements, each steered by a quantum expert or ARM Hub engineer. The five challenges explored a wide scope of deep tech: an IoT needle-insertion trainer with a quantum sensing upgrade path; a machine vision system for classifying grass health; a quantum PAR sensor for automated greenhouse lighting; a robotics cell for timber scaffold assembly in a manufacturing SME; and a fine-tuned small language model for secure text-to-SQL.

Rather than committing to a single project, the point of the day was to think out loud, question assumptions, and see how far an idea could go with the right people around the table. By midday, every group reported back on what they’d found and how they thought the problem in front of them could be solved.

For ARM Hub, the workshop marked its first step in a program designed to give students a chance to engage with industry-grade problems early in their professional journey.

I admired the thoughtful way in which the students engaged with the problems and their peers from different disciplines to get a nuanced understanding of what industry was seeking and then to step through possible responses,” said Allison Bambrick, ARM Hub Executive Manager. “Having experts from Queensland’s universities share insights around current quantum applications was a great start: I learn something new every time I’m in the audience at a Quantum Australia event.”
