Ammonia leak reported at Orica plant
An ammonia gas leak occurred at Orica’s Kooragang Island site in Newcastle on 11 March, with an unconfirmed quantity of ammonia from a 60 m high vent stack.
The company reported the incident to the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and NSW Fire and Recsue. The EPA is investigating the incident and has requested an urgent incident report from Orica.
The ammonia release is believed to be the result of the activation of a pressure-relief valve. This has now been reset and the plant has resumed operations.
The EPA has called for any members of the community detecting an ammonia-like odour to call the EPA’s Environment Line on 131 555.
