Elpro Technologies has announced the release of a plant-wide wireless instrumentation system, the CyNET WIB or Wireless Instrumentation Backbone. The WIB provides integrated wireless connectivity for instrumentation and control signals, as well as different field communication buses.

The WIB replaces expensive signal and fieldbus wiring, with seamless connectivity between different bus systems.

CyNET Wireless I/O and Wireless Gateway units automatically interconnect and communicate, using the unconstrained medium of free-to-air wireless.

The WIB uses 900 MHz frequency hopping wireless technology. The technology is designed to work as an integral part of plant instrumentation systems - 900 MHz FH penetrates congested industrial plant and factory environments over long distances.

This wireless instrumentation system is not data-hungry, allowing the WIB's data-burst techniques to reliably handle large I/O systems within a crowded radio spectrum with real-time performance.

Elpro uses its CyNET 905U wireless I/O product family and 905G wireless gateway products as the building blocks of the WIB. These products use advanced peer-to-peer communications to wirelessly replicate traditional J-box marshalling networks, including interfaces for a large number of fieldbuses.
