Victoria's talent for great design across diverse manufacturing sectors was showcased in October during the State of Design 2006 program.

Minister for Manufacturing and Export, André Haermeyer said State of Design 2006 brought together design associations, professionals, cultural and tertiary institutions and design-oriented businesses through seminars, exhibitions and other public events.

"Design will play a vital role in securing Australia's economic future, adding value to its exports, reinvigorating its traditional industries and breathing life into emerging industries," he said.

Mr Haermeyer also opened the Premier's Design Awards Exhibition at the Melbourne Museum, which showcases the work of 40 finalists in the Premier's Design Awards.

The awards recognise the achievements of new and established Victorian designers. The finalists' designs cover a range of areas from built environment and communications to fashion and textile and product design.
