Training for the future

A specialist training program introduced by South Australian pipe fittings manufacturer Philmac is providing managers with the opportunity to further their careers by obtaining formal business administration qualifications while at work.

The program, run by Philmac in conjunction with the University of South Australia and mining contractor Boart Longyear, enables participants to study up to Masters (MBA) level through a combination of study groups, work-based projects and Internet study.

Participants study four units a year, with an MBA obtained after three years successful participation. The qualifications are recognised by the University.

Philmac's Managing Director, Chris Stathy, said nine mangers from within Philmac had commenced the course last year.

"While not all of them will continue through to MBA level, the course also provides formal Certificate and Diploma qualification," he said.

"The level of qualification for each manager will largely depend on the individuals position and requirements, but we would expect at least half of those undertaking the course will obtain an MBA."

Stathy said the work-based projects required as part of the studies were sourced from within Philmac, giving the company another benefit apart from improved management expertise.

He said the networking opportunities for management during their studies had been another additional advantage for the company.

These course were available on a non-discriminatory basis to all employees in their own time or in company time if the courses were necessary for their jobs.

Philmac products are used in diverse applications, from plumbing and municipal systems through to livestock water control, horticultural and parklands irrigation, industrial uses and mining. Through its sophisticated sales network, Philmac sells worldwide to industry distributors, and water and gas utilities.
