According to GE Fanuc's European head, Marcel van Helten, process control and industrial automation will become one entity in the not-so-distant future.

According to van Helten, the PLC will be the first piece of equipment to get a 'makeover' by morphing into a programmable automation controller that will contain the elements of a SCADA front, the function of a traditional PLC but with enough power to control motors directly and an ethernet connection to allow enterprise-wide integration.

This latest prediction by van Helten echoes similar comments that have been made recently by a number of companies including Rockwell Automation.
