Conference on welding and engineering

Tuesday, 16 May, 2006

A one-day conference on Welding and the Engineer will be held as part of the WELDTECH exhibition, which is running during National Manufacturing Week 2006 at Sydney's Darling Harbour, from May 30 to June 2.

It will be held on June 1 at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre, Darling Harbour.

The conference, which is co-sponsored by the Welding Technology Institute of Australia (WTIA) and Engineers Australia, will provide a professional introduction to the latest developments in welding engineering.

Although not all engineers are directly involved in overseeing welding activities, Australian companies are finding it increasingly important to control the design, contractual, specification, fabrication, construction, maintenance and repair costs of equipment and plant and engineers need to understand the role of welding technologies.

Australia's leaders in welding technology and practice will outline the latest advances while highlighting their relevance to daily engineering activities, from design to inspection to maintenance.

In addition, case studies and success stories will illustrate the relevance of welding, and its potential impact on a company.

According to WTIA, welding is used in over 20,000 companies in Australia in applications, ranging from the microjoining of medical devices, electronics and photonics down to 5 microns, through to components over 1 m thick welded in a single pass.

Participation in the conference may be credited towards Engineers Australia's Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements.
