ABB has won the Platts 2003 Global Energy Award for its part in developing the world's most powerful storage battery system.

The "˜Energy Engineering Project of the Year' project was awarded for the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Fairbanks, Alaska, owned by the Golden Valley Electric Association (GVEA).

The BESS will produce up to 27 MW of power for 15 minutes in the event of an outage, allowing the utility enough time to bring backup generation online. For a shorter time, the BESS can even produce up to 46 MW.

Now in its fifth year, the Platts Global Energy Awards have become the most prestigious awards program in the industry. There were nearly 200 nominations from every continent and every field of energy in this year's competition. The Energy Engineering Project Year Award recognises innovation, practicality and commitment to safety and the environment.
