Safety Induction required for Queensland gas workers

Friday, 26 August, 2016

From 1 July 2016, all new industry starters are required to complete an Industry Safety Induction (ISI) prior to working on the operation or development of any facilities in the Queensland natural gas exploration and production industry.

The need for a common induction program within the Queensland natural gas industry was identified by a number of senior industry leaders to:

  • reach a target of total recordable injury frequency rate (TRIFR) of less than 1 by 2018. A key component of achieving this target will be the competence and behaviour of industry personnel. This starts with the induction process;
  • streamline the process as many contractors work for several operators, often on various sites. This leads to duplication, cost inefficiencies and potential confusion via mixed messages when delivering safety inductions to workers as they move from client to client and site to site.

The ISI is a one-day training course which ensures participants are equipped with the knowledge and skills to operate safely in their roles as they enter the industry.

Topics that will be covered in the induction include:

  • Introduction to the Queensland Natural Gas E&P industry
  • General overview of legislation and duty of care obligations
  • Workplace hazards and risks
  • Communicating about hazards and risks in the workplace
  • Expectations of safe workplace behaviour

Chief Executive Officer of Murphy Pipe and Civil and Co-Champion of Safer Together’s Competence and Behaviour Workgroup John Smith said the standardised induction aims to provide those who are new to the industry with the correct access and ticket to work.

“This initiative is about setting the standards for our industry and ensuring those who work here understand what is expected of them.

“Safer Together is helping facilitate unique collaborations between operators and contractors to showcase our joint commitment to safety and delivering a safer workplace for our people,” he said.

Safer Together has partnered with AWCC and Wild Geese International to deliver the ISI. Partnerships with AWCC and Wild Geese International have provided for high-quality delivery across several locations including Brisbane, Gladstone, Toowoomba, Roma, Chinchilla and Dalby.

The ISI was developed for Safer Together by Energy Skills Queensland. It is used by Safer Together and our Approved Program Providers under licence to Energy Skills Queensland.
