Rain and spill detectors

Amalgamated Instrument Co has announced a flood/liquid detection and alarm system and a rain/precipitation detection and alarm system. The systems consist of a common detection and alarm module and specialised sensors for each function.

The base detection and alarm module is powered by 24 VAC/DC or 240 VAC (model dependent). The module provides two changeover relays for alarm and control functions. The response delay (trigger time) of the relays can be set between 3 and 12 s. This minimises the possibility of false triggering. Precipitation or liquid must be present for the set time before the relays will operate and, similarly, the sensors must be dry for the set time before the relays will reset.

The rain/precipitation head has a leaf-like printed circuit detector and is also fitted with a heater. The heater is designed to speed the return to a ‘no precipitation’ condition and also helps eliminate false alarms due to dew or for condensation.

The flood/liquid sensor has two stainless steel probes and the impedance between the probes to an AC current is monitored. Multiple sensor heads can be attached to one detection module to provide a wider coverage area.

The liquid/flood detection system is suitable for situations where liquid may be spilled and where the presence of free water could be a safety hazard or a symptom of a system failure. The rain/precipitation detection system could be used where processes, transport, access etc, need to be controlled in the case of rain.
