Endress+Hauser’s Field Xpert is a compact, handheld communicator that is designed to streamline device commissioning, diagnostics and troubleshooting both directly and offline.

It operates with HART/Bluetooth modems and WLAN (Wi-Fi) supported networks. Device descriptions (DDs) can be wirelessly downloaded straight to Field Xpert without requiring a separate laptop or computer to access the internet. The handheld then communicates to the field device modem via Bluetooth for fast, convenient commissioning and troubleshooting, without cable length restrictions.

Offline configurations can be viewed and downloaded later to the field device. The same data can be downloaded to multiple devices by changing the key reference or tag number, reducing plant technician time in the field.

The device is based on Microsoft Windows Mobile 6 and provides fast boot up and operation. Special device functions such as the company’s envelope curves for time-of-flight level measurement devices and automatic DD library repair are supported. Further applications for plant asset-management activities, such as maintenance and documentation, can also be installed using the Asset Xpert software tool. A 3.5″ transflective TFT colour screen allows Field Xpert to be used in bright sunlight and normal light while good graphics display charts and graphs in an easy-to-read format.

The compact device weighs 550 g and has a rechargeable lithium ion battery to maximise time between charges. A robust shockproof casing offers protection from static electricity, dust and water and means it can be used in hazardous areas. An intrinsically safe version is also available.
