  • The drive for harmonic balance
The presence of harmonics can drastically alter the quality of the power provided to electrical systems and may affect equipment on that supply. Peter Tomazic, Solution Consultant for the Systems and Solutions business of Rockwell Automation, explains how harmonics are generated, why they are a problem and discusses various engineered solutions that can mitigate their effects.

  • Building a reliable VFD system
A variable frequency drive (VFD) regulates the speed of a three-phase AC electric motor by controlling the frequency and voltage of the power it delivers to the motor.
  • Save energy and achieve greater control with variable speed drives
In today’s climate of rising energy costs and carbon trading schemes, any technology which helps plants use energy more efficiently should be adopted. Variable speed drives offer the ability to control the speed and torque of motors in many applications while providing significant energy savings — but only if implemented correctly in the right application.
  • Danfoss digs deep into environmental issues
Sylvia Aitken recently had the opportunity to pick the brain of Danfoss president, Sven Ruder. In part one of this interview, we take a look at the company's successful philosophy and why the environment is a key concern to a number of its processes

The Movipro SDC (standard drive controller) features a compact IP54-rated enclosure and is designed to provide industry with an easy-to-use field-mountable drive solution, suitable for decentralised single-axis speed control and positioning applications.
  • ABB ACS 2000 air-cooled AC drive
The ACS 2000 air-cooled general-purpose AC drive is designed for reliability, easy installation and fast commissioning. The drive is specifically targeted at fan, pump, compressor and other common applications in industries such as water, cement, minerals and mining, metals, oil and gas, pulp and paper, power generation and chemical.
  • Sinamics G150 Clean Power frequency converter
The Sinamics G150 Clean Power frequency converter from Siemens is designed to provide an energy-efficient drive with high power rating for fans, pumps and compressors or extruders, mixers and mills. The converter also reduces low-frequency harmonic effects on the system and thus fulfils the high requirements for current and voltage quality placed on mains supplies.
  • Altivar 312 variable speed drive
The Altivar 312 variable speed drive’s auto-tuning, preprogrammed application settings and enhanced communication capabilities are designed to ensure suitability for applications ranging from standalone production machines to integrated process architectures.
  • Altivar 12 variable speed drive
Specifically developed for integration into small industrial and consumer machines, the Altivar 12 variable speed drive ensures easy set-up, flexibility and installation time saving in a compact package.
  • High power drives
Schneider Electric’s Altivar 61 Plus and Altivar 71 Plus are low-voltage variable speed drives for high power ratings, from 90 kW to 2400 kW, and are designed for simplicity of operation.
  • Drives
The ACS850 drive features an in-built, energy-saving calculator, embedded Modbus and drive-to-drive link, intelligent user interface with a series of assistant wizards, integrated safety functions, modular hardware and software, and a removable memory unit.
  • AC drive delivers more options
The Allen-Bradley PowerFlex 755 AC drive from Rockwell Automation has a range of sophisticated features, which the company says allows it to deliver more options for intelligent motor control and integration flexibility than any other drive in its class.
  • Low harmonic drives
The VLT Aqua Drive, VLT Automation Drive and VLT HVAC Drive are now available in a low harmonic version. The VLT low harmonic drive reduces the harmonic distortion and load on the supply network by actively imposing currents in counter phase, so that the high-quality sine wave of the network current is restored.
  • Low harmonic drives
Danfoss Drives claims to have launched the first mass-produced VLT low harmonic drive. The drive eliminates the harmonic disturbances on the supply grid by actively imposing currents into the grid so that the high-quality sine wave of the grid current is maintained.
  • Current switches
Dwyer Instruments has released the series SCS current switch, suitable for monitoring whether fans, pumps, or motors are operating.
  • Pump and fan drive
ABB has announced a low-voltage AC drive, specifically targeted at pump and fan applications ranging from 0.37 to 22 kW. Built-in PID controllers are used to vary the drive’s performance in response to changes in pressure, flow or other external data, modifying the performance according to the needs of the application. This can eliminate the need for an external PLC and helps to save energy.
  • Variable speed drives
NHP carries stock of the Santerno range of variable speed drives, which includes the Sinus Nano, Micro and Penta drives.
  • Drive
Representing the first drive from the Allen-Bradley PowerFlex 750 series, the PowerFlex 755 AC drive is available in power ranges from 7.5 to 250 kW at 400/480 VAC and 540/650 VDC input. It supports multiple languages, meets global standards and certifications, and is suitable for many industries, including manufacturing, food and beverage, water/wastewater, materials handling, metals, mining and automotive.
