August a bleak month for Australia's manufacturers
The manufacturing sector in Australia began to contract in August, according to the latest survey from the Australian Industry Group (Ai Group).
The performance of manufacturing index score of 47.3 was down from 50.7 in July, sliding below the boom-or-bust mark of 50 that separates expansion from contraction.
Of the eight manufacturing sub-sectors, only food and beverages and wood and paper products recorded an expansion.
“Manufacturers remain cautious about the outlook and continue to focus on reining in their costs as they battle these weak trading conditions,” said Ai Group Chief Executive Innes Willox.
