IChemE signs up its first Australian Technician Member
The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) has announced that National Offshore Petroleum Safety & Environment Management Authority (NOPSEMA) OHS regulatory specialist Michael Clarke is the first Australian to apply for the new member grade Technician Member (EngTech).
The new grade was introduced to bridge the qualification gap for technicians who sought recognition for their professional support of the process engineering industry. Clarke said that the qualification is particularly relevant at NOPSEMA: “I saw the Technician Member and EngTech registration with IChemE as an important verification of my experience and qualifications.
“Completing the application was a good exercise in reflecting on how my experience demonstrated the required competencies.”
“I was particularly pleased to receive this recognition with IChemE through the technician route that recognises my qualifications and experience related to chemical engineering,” said Clarke
IChemE director Australasia Peter Slane said that this grade provides independent international certification of skills and acknowledges a commitment to their profession and inspires confidence in employers that they have relevant experience and dedication to their profession.
“Introducing this membership level provides an opportunity for technicians to now become part of the global process engineering community and begin the process for further career development within the engineering profession.”
Technician membership acknowledges those who are skilled, hands-on professionals who have a practical understanding of engineering principles to help solve engineering problems, but do not have a qualification in chemical engineering. It can also apply to those at the beginning of their career who are studying for a qualification, or undertaking an apprenticeship
Professional registration requires technicians to meet IChemE’s international standards and will only be awarded following a successful peer assessment of competency and approach to good work practice and conduct.
